Position Description - Executive Director

The Squeaky Wheel is searching for an Executive Director to lead the organisation into its next stage of growth. You will be an original thinker, excellent communicator, results focused and primed to take on the responsibilities of leading this unique community based organisation to ongoing success.

The new position will report to the board and work alongside the General Manager in a small team. The role contains great scope to define the direction of the Company in the future, so the successful candidate will be passionate about making their mark and prepared to work hard to ensure the ongoing success of the organisation.

The Squeaky Wheel provides a service model of training, tours, valet parking, campaigns and programming available to help normalise bike riding in communities around Melbourne. The new Executive Director will take this model, redefine and extend it to help even more people experience the benefits of life on two wheels.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the General Manager on all aspects of Company management, with a strong focus on sales growth and marketing.

Duration: 12-month contract with 6-month review
Hours: Full time
Salary: $70,000 plus mandatory superannuation plus performance bonus
Reports to: Board of Management
Responsible for: General Manager (GM), Casual staff and subcontractors
 

Duties

Governance & Leadership

  • Management of relationships & reporting to the Board
  • Manage and inform the Company’s Business, Strategic and Marketing Plans with GM and Board
  • Participation in bicycle industry & community/transport events and opportunities
  • Define and embody values and vision of Company
  • Management of reporting to ASIC and other statutory bodies
  • Initiate and manage relationships with key stakeholders
  • Support GM on duties where appropriate
  • Manage staff and volunteers with GM

Financial

  • Development of and accountability for Annual Budget
  • Development and oversight of all Project Budgets with GM
  • Liaison with John Paxinos & Assoc. regarding annual budgeting, financial position, cashflow, reporting, project invoicing & wages

Development & Programming

  • Active and ongoing sales to meet Company targets
  • Creation of new business & program models
  • Management of repeat business & programs with GM
  • Responding to sales enquiries and preparation of quotes with GM
  • Writing & reviewing grants & acquittals in collaboration project partners
  • Attendance at client meetings at inception & development & evaluation phase
  • Responding to general enquiries and information requests with GM

Administration

  • Manage and maintain digital and hard copy records and filing systems
  • Recruitment and Liaison with subcontractors (in collaboration with GM)
  • Preparation of evaluation reports

Marketing

  • Content development and upkeep of website, social media platforms and newsletter
  • Preparation of press releases and statements where appropriate
  • Representation to media both active and responsive
     

The position is based out of The Squeaky Wheel’s office in Preston, with a satellite meeting space in Docklands available for use.  It is expected that large amounts of travel within metropolitan Melbourne will be required. A driver’s license and car would be beneficial but is not essential.
 

Selection criteria

  • Proven ability to drive sales and income generation through programming and service provision
  • Management experience in a not for profit or community setting
  • Efficient, self-motivated with the ability to work alone and as part of small team
  • Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, negotiation, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in web content creation and distribution
  • Familiarity with local, national and international practices in bicycle advocacy and service provision
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required
