Feeling safe on a bike is something that matters a lot to us at The Squeaky Wheel. We spend a so much of our time training people from all walks of life in how to safely get around Melbourne by bike; whether it's women on our Pushy Women programs, refugees who are new in our communities, kid's busting for the independence a bike will bring or culture buffs wanting some tips on riding in the city.

Melbourne is still striving to become a world-class cycling city. Is fear of riding holding us back or is it genuinely unsafe on the roads? We're hosting a Forum at the Sustainable Living Festival in collaboration with CrowdSpot to examine percieved risk, how it effects people's decision to ride and how this plays out in Melbourne.

Join us in The Shed, at Birrarung Marr on Sunday 14th Feburary at 4pm as a panel of experts lead the discussion before an opportunity for questions from the audience. Included on the panel will be;

  • our very own Pip Caroll, Founder and Director at The Squeaky Wheel
  • Jane Waldock, Manager Sustainability and Strategic Transport at the City of Yarra
  • and Alexander Sheko, Consultant with GTA Consultants

This Forum will also see the launch of our BikeSpot project, a collaboration, enabled by a TAC Community Road Safety Grant, between The Squeaky Wheel and CrowdSpot, to understand the bicycle riding community's perceived level of safety compared to historical crashes at locations across Melbourne.

RIDING IN MELBOURNE: PERCEIVED FEAR OR REAL RISK- Is our fear of riding holding us back? Sunday February 14th 4pm at the Sustainable Living Festival, The Shed, Birrarung Marr, Melbourne, 3000

This is a FREE event. Bring your friends!

Proudly presented in partnership with our favourite self appointed commuter cycling evangelist Catherine Deveny, Pushy Women will bring together Melbourne’s most fabulous and fiercely funny women to share their story of life on two wheels.

A gangbuster line up of town bikes, lady riders, pedal pushers, lycra ladettes, fixie hipsters, BMX bandits, dykes on bikes, step through ladies and women who don't ride AT ALL.

Six of Melbourne's most prominent comedians and performers will present their take on being a pushy woman this coming April. Now in it's fifth year, and second in the Melbourne Comedy Festival this laugh out loud storytelling event celebrating women's lives on wheels. Featuring:

Hosted and curated by writer, comedian, atheist and self appointed commuter cycling evangelist Catherine Deveny, Pushy Women is an ode to this inimitable Melbournian's love of bikes. “It’s faster than walking, safer than driving, cheaper than public transport and it’s the closest thing to flying”, Catherine Deveny.

“She's brassy in her delivery and transgressive in her material, acting as a mouthpiece for those tired of the blithe accepted wisdoms and no-go zones of mainstream society. Her audience is delighted”, The Age.

One of our favourite times of year has to be the annual MoreArt Public Art Show

Each year the City of Moreland invites artists to transform public spaces alongside and around the Upfield Bike Path and train line with work created for specific spaces. And one of the best ways to discover the work is of course, by bicycle!

Our MoreArt Night Ride will be the perfect opportunity to enjoy a different side of MoreArt and will make the most of those installations that will be lit up.

The MoreArt Night Ride will be held on Sunday October 25th and will start from Green Park Dining on the Capital City Trail. The theme of this year's show is Participation and many of the art works are created to invite your involvement in one way or another. We'll head over to Jewell Station to join in with the interactive elements of  Matter of Fact Jewell Station before heading North up the Upfield where we'll find Public Execution at The Commons.

From Moreland Station we'll head over to the Brunswick Shimmy and enjoy some suburban back-street riding as we make our way back down to the Mechanics Institute to view the lit sculptures Dream Boat and Suburban Therapy. We'll finish up at the Brunswick Green for a sociable drink and chatter about our evening.

Each year the City of Moreland invites artists to transform spaces alongside and round the Upfield Shared Path precinct with work created for specific spaces. And one of the best ways to discover the work is of course by bicycle!

Join us for an afternoon exploring highlights of the MoreArt Public Art Show by bike. We're thrilled to have Jane O'Neill joining us this year to host this and our other rides and she'll be introducing us to the artist at each installation we visit who will give us some background on the work and answer your questions.

Jane O'Neill is a freelance art curator and the founder of Art Aficionado Tours - a Melbourne-based team of dedicated contemporary art curators committed to the promotion of Australian and International contemporary art projects through art tours, public talks, collection management and written essays.

This MoreArt Ride will be held on Sunday November 22nd and will start from Gowrie Station. We'll be working our way south down the Upfield Shared Path past visual art and participatory installations.  The theme of this year's show is Participation and many of the art works are created to invite your involvement in one way or another.

Our first ride for 2015 will coincide with the launch of MoreArt so not only do you get first look at the works in the show but you get to celebrate its opening! We're thrilled to have Jane O'Neill joining us this year to host this and our other rides.

Jane O'Neill is a freelance art curator and the founder of Art Aficionado Tours - a Melbourne-based team of dedicated contemporary art curators committed to the promotion of Australian and International contemporary art projects through art tours, public talks, collection management and written essays.

And for this ride only we'll be joined by Larissa MacFarlane whose work, A Ritual of Handstands, (above) we'll also be visiting.

The MoreArt Launch Ride will be held on Sunday October 25th and will start from Moreland Station. We'll be taking in artwork at Coburg Mall, Coburg Library, and at various spots on the Upfield Shared Path.

The theme of this year's show is Participation and many of the art works are created to invite your involvement in one way or another. On this tour we'll be visiting Revolutionary Monuments where you are invited to bring an item that represents something you'd like to be rid of for 'execution' by a guillotine.

We will also visit Golden Opportunity another interactive piece for which you are invited to bring your favourite everyday object to be transformed at the Golden Opportunity Shop and leave with something unexpected and special.

Artists will be present as we view all the works to give some background on their work and answer questions.

Our final stop will be at the Mechanic's Institute on Sydney Road, Brunswick visiting two installations, Dream Boat and Suburban Therapy, before joining the official launch and celebration where refreshments will also be served.

This  tour is appropriate for intermediate riders and will take place mainly on off road bike lanes (Upfield bike path) - some riding on on-road bike lanes and back streets required.

Bring some water, sunscreen and snacks, places limited to 22 participants.

This is a FREE ride but it is essential that you reserve your place.

Its Ride 2 Work Day on Wednesday October 14th and we reckon thats a great day to get back on your bike or get a friend onto theirs.

Of course when we say 'Ride to Work' we really mean, just ride! Commuting by bicycle is scientifically proven to make you happier, and while some people like to literally ride to work, others might prefer to ride to the station or the tram or bus stop. Did you know that in countries like the Netherlands with the highest riding rates, most people don't actually ride to work, they just ride part of the way?

However you plan to do it, Ride 2 Work Day is a brilliant excuse to make a start! And whether you're a first-timer or a regular we'd like to help celebrate. We'll  be stationed at Hortus Seven Seeds in Docklands between 7:30 and 9am.

Our good friends Good Cycles will be joining us to offer free bike tune-ups to ensure your ride is super-smooth and we'll have details of all the great spring programming we have lined up!

Yep, we've told Catherine to get on her bike and start pedalling as Pushy Women heads to the Sydney Fringe Comedy Festival for the very first time thanks to the fabulous blackcat productions.

We all know that riding a bike is good for us. And its certainly good for our kids! Families who ride together are happy, healthy and better able to concentrate over the course of the day.  Would you like to be able to ride with your kids, maybe to school, the market, friend's places or the park? If you're being held back by a lack of confidence in your own skills or knowledge and live in North Melbourne join us for one of our Good Wheel Cycling with ChildrenTraining sessions.

The Squeaky Wheel will be presenting Good Wheel training sessions, funded by the City of Melbourne, for parents a carers who would like to ride with kids.  This program is FREE to attend and suitable for people with basic bike skills (not beginners).

This two and a half hour session will take you through everything you need to know to safely check your own and your children's bike and equipment, be confident about the road rules that apply to you and your children, practice your own skills and know about the skills your child needs to have as well as give you information about local routes. If time permits, each session will finish with a short local ride practising everything we've talked about.

Do you live in the west? Are you one of the thousands of 'interested but concerned' women who would like to ride for transport but don't feel you have the skills or knowledge to start?

We have teamed up with Joyce from CycleStyle to present the Westie Women on Wheels program, made possible with the support of the Maribyrnong Community Grants program. This program is FREE to attend and suitable for people with basic bike skills (not beginners).

If you are looking for the impetus you need to get going, this is the perfect program for you. Delivered over 3 sessions, you will receive bicycle skills training, road rule education and route planning advice for your local area. The final session will take the form of a social ride, introducing you to the safest and most direct routes for amenities in your local area.
