Good Wheel Project

GoodWheelProject.jpg

The Good Wheel Project is a collaboration between The Squeaky Wheel and not for profit social enterprise Good Cycles. The pilot program staged in February 2014 has been supported by the City of Melbourne and is delivered in partnership with refugee settlement agency AMES.

The program provides participants with a working bicycle, basic instruction in maintenance, information on road rules and conventions governing bike riding behaviour in Melbourne and a experience in route planning and riding in the Melbourne CBD.

The project objectives are:

  • To deliver information about Victorian road rules.
  • To support safe cycling in an inner city road environment.
  • To promote messaging about achieving positive road safety outcomes by complying with the road rules and demonstrating courteous behaviour.
  • Improve level of understanding the road rules and behavioural expectations in less familiar street environments.
  • Mitigate the potential for safety issues when road users are presented with new and unfamiliar road environments.
  • Increase level of individual responsibility among road users.
  • Increase mobility of new refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Provide opportunities for social connectedness and foster a sense of belonging.

Stayed tuned for an update on the pilot program.

A Melbourne tradition, it is a celebration of summer, showcasing Australian artists and talents against the spectacular natural beauty of the St Kilda foreshore. Since 2011 we've been providing Roll Up Bicycle Valet Parking's shiny red and white pushy park on St Kilda Festival’s Big Sunday. This year there will be two bike valet locations...

We are so committed to the spreading the joy and accessibility of bike riding to women that in 2014, we are going to straddle the mighty Yarra to make it happen. That’s right, we are not going to attempt to conquer Melbourne’s great divide, we are going to match it!

Pushy Women is our ongoing program of activities and happenings, presented in partnership with Catherine Deveny.  The first pushbike out of the driveway is the Pushy Women NORTH speaking event at the Thornbury Theatre. See 8 women talk for 8 minutes each about bikes and life.
