The good people at the City of Port Phillip are amongst the most proactive and dedicated bunch we've come across in promoting and facilitating new experiences of bike riding.

Given the decidedly female slant of the Squeaks (check out this bunch of babes) we are very attuned to the special circumstances that encourage or discourage women to ride, and also how few opportunities there have been for women to educate themselves in a supportive environment.

So we couldn't have been happier than to partner up with our seaside buddies who have gone OVER AND ABOVE to celebrate women's bike riding through the She Spoke: Southside Women on Wheels series, which includes a number of Squeaky Wheel produced rides and events.  You'll learn, laugh, explore, meet new people, see new places and best of all, you won't have to organise any of it yourself, the work has all been done for you.  So there's never been a better time to dust of that treadlie and dip your toe into the world of opportunity that awaits.

Today marks a new direction in the journey of The Squeaky Wheel.

This direction includes a beautiful new website and brand, and a new service model based around five key areas - rides and tours, programming, bicycle parking, campaigns and training. We're also launching a huge program of activities that you can take part in, delivered in partnership with clients, collaborators and friends

We do this at the same time as transitioning to a new organisational model, a Not For Profit Company Limited by Guarantee, overseen by an experienced Board of Directors who will steer The Squeaky Wheel through the next stage of growth.

We are big believers in the change a bicycle can bring, and will advocate for this as widely as possible. Our work is designed to make every participant, client, audience member and the wider community a vehicle for this change.

We know that riding a bike improves physical health, mental health, community health and the health of the environment.  We know that it generates prosperity, makes transport more accessible, cities more liveable and roads more loveable. And yet, here in Melbourne, just 2% of trips are taken by bike.

This needs to change.

Our vision is that Australian culture supports bike riding as a mainstream transport choice. The statistics tell us it's a long road ahead but we hope you'll join us for the journey.

So welcome to The (new and improved) Squeaky Wheel.
A place where everyone is a vehicle for change.

Since 2011 we've been providing Roll Up Bicycle Valet Parking's shiny red-white pushy park on St Kilda Festival’s Big Sunday, with constantly growing bike racks to cater for the bike riding masses. This year there will be two bike valet locations: If you’re coming from the city, take Catani Gardens, here you’ll also find the tune-pumping Silent Disco, fabulous food + chanting from the Hare Krishna Vedic Village and carnival fun in the Kids-Zone.

Because we love to reward you for riding to the Festival (instead of not finding a carpark or sitting in a sweaty tram…), we thought we give a lil’ extra something back and have teamed up with our new friends, the pedal powered smoothie people, Bike n’ Blend who have their juicy-orange tent just next door: Every rider who rolls up at the Catani Gardens bike park  (grab your voucher from the Roll Up desk) will get a discount smoothie ($1 off) … pedal your own: Mango-Speed-Coco Nuts, Apple-Berry-Boost or Tandem-Tangy-Slushie!

The Good Wheel Project is a collaboration between The Squeaky Wheel and not for profit social enterprise Good Cycles. The pilot program staged in February 2014 has been supported by the City of Melbourne and is delivered in partnership with refugee settlement agency AMES.

The program provides participants with a working bicycle, basic instruction in maintenance, information on road rules and conventions governing bike riding behaviour in Melbourne and a experience in route planning and riding in the Melbourne CBD.

The project objectives are:

  • To deliver information about Victorian road rules.
  • To support safe cycling in an inner city road environment.
  • To promote messaging about achieving positive road safety outcomes by complying with the road rules and demonstrating courteous behaviour.
  • Improve level of understanding the road rules and behavioural expectations in less familiar street environments.
  • Mitigate the potential for safety issues when road users are presented with new and unfamiliar road environments.
  • Increase level of individual responsibility among road users.
  • Increase mobility of new refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Provide opportunities for social connectedness and foster a sense of belonging.

Stayed tuned for an update on the pilot program.

In the eternal wisdom of Kenny Rogers, you’ve got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them (come on, sing with me...) know when to walk away, know when to run…

After three Melbourne Bikefests and three Bicycle Film Festivals before that, in 2013 we decided that it was time to fold the cards on the festivals we have worked hard to bring you since 2009. Not because we have a dud hand, but because we know that the tide is turning.

We won’t rule out a return of Bikefest, rising from the groundswell of social, environmental and community innovation that is taking Melbourne by storm. After seven years of working to promote bike riding, we have learned to read the game, and guess what, everyone? We can all be winners!

Celebrating and promoting bike riding is so important that a mere four weeks a year doesn’t do it justice. We don’t want to be part time advocates, we want to do it all year round. So this year we are proud to launch an exciting new chapter in the life of The Squeaky Wheel.

A chapter in which every week we work with like minded collaborators to make Melbourne a great bike city. So keep reading good folk, the story has just begun.
