It's that time of year again! When the best of arguably Melbourne's most creative community, (The People's Republic of Moreland) come out from their studios and loungerooms and present works for all to enjoy at sites along the Upfield train line.

We've been involved in staging bicycle tours of the MoreArt Public Art show for four years now, and it's one of our favourite gigs of the year. Interesting people, thought provoking artworks, unusual outdoor experiences, all on two wheels!

The line up this year is stronger than ever, and places are open for our FREE guided tours of the show. Even if you don't come along on a tour, everyone is welcome at the opening party. Invite below. Download the MAP and ARTIST CATALOGUE via the Moreland website. See you there!

2.5 Days, 4 speakers, dozens of ideas. Building ideas to make cycling better for all.

Cyclehack Melbourne was staged over 3 days from 20 - 22 June 2014. The event brought people together to come up with ideas that solve the barriers to cycling and build them in under48 hours. Cyclehack was also run in several other cities – Glasgow, Hamburg, San Fransisco, Kuala Lumpur, Philadelphia, Bristol, check out the global site to see what kinds of outcomes were created.

Melbourne Cyclehack kicked off with a social networking event including presentations by four locals  with a expert perspective on solving design problems.
Anthony Aisenberg, Founder & Director, Crowdspot
Alice Lewis, Founder/Designer, Night Brigade
Mark Strachan, Lecturer, Industrial Design and Product Design Engineering, Swinburne University
Pip Carroll, Founder & Executive Director, The Squeaky Wheel

Following this, we all headed to Swinburne University's Design Factory for a weekend focusing on designing, forming ideas and creating prototypes that could be implemented into a city environment. The enrolled participants were assisted by facilitators and mentors including:

Faith Hunter, Editor, Treadlie Magazine
Damon Rao, Transport Planner, The City of Melbourne
Danielle Madeley, Engineer, software developer and bike mechanic
Carl Turner, Design Lecturer/mentor at Swinburne Design Factory
Joakim Eriksson, Lecturer and Coach at Swinburne University of Technology

Check out the stream at  @CyclehackMLB or use the hashtag #cyclehack

2014 has been a big year for Awards here at Squeak central. Not only were we very proud and honoured to be awarded a Champion of Change Award by Cycling Victoria in March for our work on the Pushy Women program, but this week we bagged another one!

The Global VeloCity conference held in Adelaide this week awarded Pip Carroll (on behalf of our staff, committee and many partners and contributors) a Cycling LUMINARY Award (l like to capitalise LUMINARY) for our work in Bike Culture and Behaviour Change.

The Awards are designed to celebrate the ideas and people that are driving the future of local, national and international cycling cultures. Wow. We feel very lucky to have won and also proud because MAN HAVE WE WORKED FOR IT.

Thanks to everyone involved. See you at the Logies.

The third part of the 2014 Share Our Streets campaign for the City of Melbourne saw us setting up a 'crime scene' on Collins St and St Kilda Rd, recreating the circumstances of car dooring. The activations were designed to communicate to the public the seriousness and potential for injury inherent in the act, and also to advise of the fine and status as a chargeable offence.

We shared tips on how to avoid causing injury to people on bikes, and encouraged people into the car to practice opening the car door with the opposite hand. Most importantly, we encouraged people to share the tips with their workmates, family and friends.

Find out more about Share Our Streets at the City of Melbourne website.

The City of Melbourne commissioned The Squeaky Wheel and behaviour change experts Mutfung to develop and deliver City of Melbourne's new road safety campaign Share Our Streets: Pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and motorcycle riders are asked to show courtesy and respect to make their journey around the city safer and more enjoyable – for everyone!

We were pleased to support the City of Melbourne in running more than 60 activities at locations around the city at sites where a particular issue or risk has been identified, some of which are:

  • Shared spaces: Some of Melbourne's most loved destinations are shared spaces, like Southbank or Harbour Esplanade. Pedestrians and bike riders may seem like odd couples but they need to get along. Street teams will remind everyone to look out for others in shared spaces (see below for pop up locations in the next weeks).
  • Distractions: One of the biggest risks for pedestrians results from the distraction of mobile phones – look up when crossing the street.  And, during April, keep your eyes peeled for larger than life characters on Swanston Street!
  • Car dooring: Particularly along St Kilda Road, car dooring remains an issue. Activations will be held to remind motorists to look out for cyclists when opening their car doors after parking.

Stay tuned for the next installment!

Thanks to the City of Melbourne Community Grants, this Autumn we conduced three fun filled city familiarisation and road safety tours for International Students.

The guided bike tours were offered free to newly arrived students, showing some great destinations to relax from busy student life and also how to navigate safely in city traffic.

We rode along the Yarra River, found out about Melbourne's arts precinct and got to know a bunch of great people, some exciting places to drink, eat and hang out in the CBD, while imparting plenty of handy tips to tackle the busy road environment.

Thanks to Melbourne Bike Share, the students rode easy, and also found out how easy it is to get around the city on two wheels.

The second part of the City of Melbourne's Share Our Streets campaign focussed on Pedestrian Distraction. During mornings and lunchtimes from March through to May 2014 we let loose a few distractible (and distracted) characters on Swanston St and St Kilda Rd.

Consumed by their, phone calls, their maps and their 'devices' (albeit, a little out of date) these two made sure the precious attention of pedestrians in complex environments was captured, making room for the delivery of a tip card and message from the Share Our Streets staff, 'thankyou for paying attention!\".
