Summer is upon us and that can mean only one thing, its festival season! And festival season is a busy time for our valet bicycle parking service Roll Up.

Established in 2011 with funding from the VicHealth MOTION program, Roll Up is a fully outsourced, customisable, rider-oriented bicycle parking service. Requiring no permanent infrastructure, Roll Up fits on the street, on footpaths, in ovals or just about anywhere. We provide infrastructure and staffing to accommodate up to 200 bikes.

Able to be located in close proximity to or within festivals and events, bicycle valet is a proven factor in encouraging active and sustainable transport. Run by bike riders for bike riders, Roll Up adds green value to any event, enhances the rider experience, rewards sustainable transport choices and promotes health through physical activity and community engagement.

Our Roll Up calendar for 2016 is off to a great start. We'll be kicking off the year at the Australia Day Festival in the City of Greater Dandenong where locals from over 150 different countries will come together to celebrate everything they have in common.

St Valentine's Day sees us in St Kilda for the annual St Kilda Festival for the fourth year running. In fact you'll be seeing double as this Festival is so big and the Roll Up service so popular we'll be in two locations, so there's no excuse not to ride your bike if you're heading to this popular day out!

Meanwhile, Sunday March 20th will see Roll Up at the Darebin Community and Kite Festival at Reservoir's picturesque Edwardes Lake Park from 11-6.

Come and say hello as you check your bike in at Roll Up at any of these summer events!

A couple of months ago we started work on a campaign along the St Georges Road shared path to get pedestrians and riders talking to each other about how they share the space. Shared spaces can be tricky and none more so than paths shared by pedestrians and bike riders who are in a hurry to be somewhere!

Working with behaviour change experts Studio Huss and the City of Darebin, we've run several sessions late on Wednesday afternoons and one on a weekend. We used the promise of free ice cream from The Rolling Scoops to entice both riders and pedestrians to stop and have a chat to each other about the way in which they share path space.

You can take a look at the ideas both riders and pedestrians put forward on the City of Darebin Facebook page. These suggestions will be used to develop a shared path etiquette and Darebin are asking you to vote here on the ideas put forward.

We're very proud of our Good Wheel program. That's the program we run with our partners Good Cycles and organisations such as the City of Melbourne, AMES, the ASRC, Victoria Police and The Huddle. You can read a little more about it here and here

Good Wheel has been attracting some attention lately. Azil, one of our graduates from our Spokeswomen program (a version of Good Wheel targeted at female asylum seekers) was recently interviewed by Michael Mackenzie on RN Afternoons. Azil is a great example of how providing a bicycle and the knowledge and confidence to use it can make a real difference to someone's life and the place they are able to make for themselves in the community. You can listen to the interview here.

The Spokeswomen program is also featured in issue 17 of Treadlie Magazine. This issue will be available from October 12th in newsagents around Australia.

Shared spaces can be tricky and none more so than paths shared by pedestrians and bike riders who are in a hurry to be somewhere! The City of Darebin have commissioned The Squeaky Wheel and behaviour change experts Studio Huss to develop and deliver a campaign to establish an etiquette for using shared paths in Darebin.

We will be hosting a series of interventions on the St Georges Road shared path during  November where bike riders and pedestrians will be invited to have a conversation, with each other, around how they share the path space and negotiating behaviour on the path.  The outcomes of these interactions will be shared with the wider community to crowdsource a new etiquette for shared paths across Darebin, which will then be shared both along the path itself and via other channels.

So how do you get cyclists and pedestrians, often in a hurry to get to where they're going, to stop and have a chat about the way in which they share path space? We think ice cream might do the trick! We'll have The Rolling Scoops on hand with four delicious flavours of their natural artisan gelato from which to choose, as a special treat for those who stop and have a chat and engage with other path users and our staff.

With four sessions, during peak hour on selected Wednesday evenings and one Saturday afternoon session, we're planning on getting as many riders and pedestrians talking to each other about negotiating path space as possible. In addition to ice cream there will be Travel Smart maps, bells and other goodies to help make everyone's trip easier - and safer!

Our first session is Saturday 7th November 1-4pm on the St Georges Road shared path, just near Northcote High School. This will be followed by three Wednesday afternoon sessions on November 11, 18 and 25 between 5-6:30pm, in the same location.

Pop down and say hello, engage with other path users and tell us what you can do to make the St Georges Rd shared path work better for everyone.

The Good Wheel Project is a collaboration between The Squeaky Wheel and not for profit social enterprise Good Cycles. The pilot program was staged in February 2014 and was initiated by the City of Melbourne.

We've delivered several iterations of the program since then, each targeting different intake groups and we're very happy to announce that we will be running two more series of the program through October and November in 2015, thanks to a Community Road Safety Grant from the Transport Accident Commission

This series will target members of the community from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, recent migrants and refugees, for whom a bicycle, and the ability to ride it safely in Melbourne,  will provide a safe and accessible means of transport. Participation in the program will provide opportunities for positive engagement with members of their local community; other participants, volunteer mentors, and those organisations involved in the program.

Each program is delivered over five sessions, in which participants are provided with a bike in good working order, a helmet, a lock, and lights thanks to our partners Nutcase and Knog. Participants also receive instruction on basic bicycle maintenance, including how to perform a bike check before riding, how to grease the chain, check the brakes, inflate tyres, remove a wheel and change a puncture.

The group are assessed for their riding skills and ability, and take part in off road skills sessions to improve their balance, braking, riding one handed (for signalling), changing gears, slow riding, starting and stopping.

The program also delivers 3 classroom sessions that outline safe riding strategies, road rules, signage meanings, negotiating intersections, roundabouts, hook turns and guidelines for riding near trams.

Participants learn to plot a route for a ride on the travel smart map, and are guided on how to best plan a route for riding in the city. The program also includes 3 rides of varying distances and complexity, building up to a long ride around the city.

Before graduating , participants undergo assessment with a quiz (usually passing with flying colours!) and all report a significant improvement in their skills, knowledge and confidence after the program.

We're working closely with AMES and the ASRC to identify suitable participants for the program but if you think you know someone who would benefit then get in touch. Or if you love riding your bike and would like to help someone else learn to love riding their's then you can also get in touch to volunteer as a mentor for the program. You can contact Jette Achleitner at The Squeaky Wheel via email jette@thesqueakywheel.com.au

The Squeaky Wheel's Wheelie Workshops are at first glance, a fairly innocuous form of children's entertainment. We rock up at events, venues and festivals with a marquee, our trained Bike Doctors, a hot glue gun and a mountain of dinosaurs and other decorative devices so that kids of all ages can spend time decorating their bike (or any other wheels they have with them - scooters or pushers, we're not snobby!), themselves or their parents, before going for a spin in a parade!

Often we bring some spare bikes (and helmets) of our own, so that everyone can have a go whether they have a bike or not, and as well as a parade we'll also give tips or even lessons, depending on the event. In fact, a Wheelie Workshop is the very embodiment of our philosophy around not only getting more people onto their bikes but reminding everyone of just how much fun riding a bike can be!

While engaged in some silly fun with our Bike Doctors, kids (and their parents) are actually learning how to do a safety check on their bike and the crucial elements to check before each ride. Our parade is the perfect opportunity to give some tips on technique and handling, the sort of small details that can turn riding from a chore to a spin!

There is however, another element to a Wheelie Workshop. As their children are absorbed in deciding whether to glue the blue dinosaur or the red palm tree onto their handlebars, parents find themselves standing around and musing on their own bike-riding. Maybe they've fallen into conversation with another parent or one of our Bike Doctors, maybe it's the sight of their own child finding the confidence to spin three times around the parade ground. Whatever it is, a Wheelie Workshop seems to remind people not only of all the times they have enjoyed riding a bike but of the possibility of going on to do so, and of involving their children.

Good Wheel is a program initiated by the City of Melbourne to help Melbournites from culturally diverse backgrounds access cycling as a safe means of getting around the city. Being new to a city, unfamiliar with local road rules and norms, not having access to a bicycle, and using a second language can all be barriers to the freedom a bicycle brings.  Together with AMESVictoria Police and our program partners, Good Cycles, we've been training new locals on donated bicycles in a friendly and supportive environment.

Not only does each graduate of the program leave with a bicycle and a helmet generously donated by Nutcase Australia, they leave with the skills to get around safely on it and a heap of new bicycling buddies! Take a look at this short film the City of Melbourne made about the Good Wheel program.
